: Call for Papers: Theological Dialogue of East and West

Dear colleagues, Theological Reflections: Eastern European Journal of Theology invites submissions to the journal's issue on the theme: Theological Dialogue of East and West

Contemporary theology seeks new ways of development, reliable theoretical and ethical foundations  on the basis of which the church will play a peacemaking role in the context of acute social contradictions and intercultural conflicts. One source of tension remains the confrontation between the "traditionalist" East and the "progressive" West, which is also reflected in the theological sphere. Because of this, the task of learning not to consider one’s own theological beliefs absolute and perfect, of understanding the "other," of entering into dialogue, of achieving mutual understanding of different theological cultures and Christian communities, is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, this issue's research field will include a comprehensive analysis of the history, problems, and prospects of theological dialogue between East and West. Particular attention will be paid to the following issues:

  • Images of East and West in historical and contemporary theological discourse;
  • Specifics of Christian theology in the East and the West;
  • Eastern European evangelical theological tradition as a unique phenomenon, and at the same time as part of the Western intellectual tradition;
  • Understanding the main theological problems in the traditions of East and West;
  • The "Western captivity" of Eastern European theology in the post-Soviet period and the formation of national theological discourses;
  • Attitudes towards modern Western theology in the Eastern European academic tradition: the search for a middle ground between complete denial and uncritical reception;
  • The problem of East-West relations from a missiological perspective;
  • Theological dialogue between East and West: a historical retrospective, problem fields, and perspectives;
  • Emigrant setting as a locus of theological dialogue.

Deadline for submissions: February 15, 2021.

Date of publication: May 15, 2021.
