Ukrainian Lutheranism as an East-European Dimension of the Reformation

V'yacheslav HORPYNCHUK

Abstract

Ukrainian Lutheranism is considered in the article as a unique manifestation of the Lutheran Reformation in the eastern Europe. As Martin Luther has reformed the Western Church so Theodor Yarchuk and his co-workers in Ukraine have reformed the liturgy of the Eastern Church. The liturgy reform was based on St. John Chrysostom Liturgy that is widely used in the modern Eastern Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches. Lutheran Reformation has been and still is a bright and right example for reforming of the Ukrainian Church and potential reform of the Ukrainian society. The Word of God does everything. This is reflected both in the liturgy and other aspects of the worship and other ecclesiological practices of the Ukrainian Lutherans. “The Lost Pearls” was a book written by a former Lutheran pastor who fled Bolsheviks. As Oscar Wagner well said the title of the book in a good way describes the fate of the Ukrainian Lutherans in the first half of the 20th century. The Ukrainian Lutheran Church is the successor of the Ukrainian Lutherans (Ukrainian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession). As of today the Ukrainian Lutheran Church continues to be the only Lutheran Church of the Eastern Rite.
